Enterprise Rent-A-Car
Satisfaction with Work
- "I really enjoy my role, I get to work with some of Enterprise Rent-A-Car's highest profile customers and also play a part in winning new business. I manage the whole Enterprise Rent-A-Car relationship with six customers and I am tasked with improving customer service, seeking efficiencies for our customers and acting as the point of liaison between Enterprise Rent-A-Car and the customer. The team I work in shares ideas and expertise as we look to develop new products and ideas for our customers. Being responsible for so many high profile contracts, having worked for Enterprise Rent-A-Car for less than seven years, feels like a real accomplishment. I am not sure that I would have achieved that working for another company." -- Strategic Account Manager
- "Since I started at the company I have always been given ownership of my business. That is still true today – I can make decisions and provide solutions to my customers to meet my department’s goals. I have complete control over my role and department, regularly interacting with customers and providing them with solutions." -- Remarketing Manager
- "I have the best job in the world dealing with customers and managing my team." – Head of Sales
- "The autonomy to take decisions that relate to my department, and the ability to contribute strategically to the overall direction of the fleet plan, and hence the group, is extremely satisfying." -- Vehicle Acquisitions Manager
- "My position is excellent, very varied as it involves meeting and chatting to potential recruits daily, lots of time on campus at universities selling our brand, and is fun." -- Talent Acquisition Manager
- "I have to admit I love working at Enterprise. Having been in many roles from Management Trainee through to Sales, each one is rewarding in their own way. I have been in the Sales Team for 6 years, running it for 4 of those. I oversee a team of regional field sales managers and get to very much shape their careers. This part of my role is arguably the best part. Promoting and working with fantastic people makes coming to work more enjoyable. My role is to work with customers wishing to have a business account with Enterprise or who have an existing account that needs expanding. This means I get to meet a great variety of people all across my region. In the latter years in this role I have concentrated on larger corporate companies and public sector. Finding opportunities to help streamline their business and save them money whilst overseeing the provision of fantastic customer service is incredibly rewarding. I get to be out and about meeting new and existing customers, run training classes for our employees and get to watch my department grow. I am also a member of the UK Diversity, Career and Family Focus Group. We meet up in London every quarter to discuss how to make Enterprise a better place to work in, and work with." -- Group Sales Manager
- "In my current role I have been given the responsibility for growing five strategic partnerships with larger clients. This role is very varied which I love and is never boring. It includes managing four teams of employees, sales, and account management. My role is customer facing day to day and I really enjoy that. I am the face of Enterprise to the client and need to take responsibility for any of our successes or failures in their eyes. I also have an opportunity to be creative and have free reign to expand this role as I see fit to achieve my goals." -- Strategic Account Manager
- "I am responsible for the running of 7 branches, 40 staff and a business of around 800 cars and turnover of £6 million. I meet with many directors, high level execs at insurance companies, and Joe Blogs from local garages, the nature of my work is overseeing the performance of my branches, the training and development of my employees, and growing the business. Customer satisfaction, employee development, fleet growth and operational profit are the 4 key areas of our business. The job is intensely rewarding, frustrating, and hard work and long hours. But, the rewards financially are there if you have the work ethic to succeed and be the best." -- Area Manager
- "My job challenges me on a daily basis as I have to balance my time carefully between employee development, ensuring we maintain strong internal controls, as well as timely and accurate financial statements and making sure my team is providing support as business partners to our Daily Rental Operations. My team act as advisors to the Daily Rental Operations to help them move their business forward by maintaining control of their costs, whilst driving their revenue and fleet and constantly delivering excellent customer service. As you can imagine all this keeps me on my toes and engaged in the business!" -- Assistant Financial Controller
- "As Implementation Manager, I usually get involved with our customers towards the end of the sales process, once they have shown interest in setting up a new account with Enterprise. I then project manage the full process to get them set up and renting vehicles. This usually involves dealing with all levels and departments within Enterprise, from IT, Billing/MI Teams, rental branches to Account Managers and General Managers. From an external perspective, I help develop the process so that it meets all of the customer's bespoke requirements, as well as assist them in their internal communication and training of new systems. The role is varied, working across all business areas and as each project is different and has individual challenges, it's never boring!" -- UK Implementation Manager
- "I am completely satisfied with my role, my job responsibilities and the part I play in our overall business strategy and success. I find my role both rewarding and challenging, no two days are the same and I love the level of initiative and ownership that I have within my role. My ideas are taken seriously and strategies are tested and used, there is no level of bureaucracy which restricts any suggestions or ways of developing a more effective business. All of the above means I am very satisfied with the career Enterprise has afforded me. I have progressed through the company to my current position and the company has supported my development each step of the way to the position I am in now. The company is currently supporting me in completing my Masters in Human Resource management. I couldn’t ask for more." -- HR Manager
- "Generally satisfied – quality of work is generally okay but can have tendency to get a bit samey from time to time." -- Vehicle Repair Manager
- "I enjoy my work on a day to day basis due to its varied nature. I am responsible for all aspects of the business from hiring and firing, training, sales, HR management, fleet management and managing a sales force. The diversity of the role means that every day and every week provides a different challenge to tackle." -- Area Manager
What does your typical day at work involve?
- "It seems a cliché to say that there is no typical day at work, but I think if you asked anyone at Enterprise Rent-A-Car that’s what they would say, and it’s because it’s true! Some days I can be with a customer all day, working in their offices and not see anyone else from Enterprise Rent-A-Car. Other days I am working at our head office with other members of the sales team on specific projects, and others days I can be at our European Business Support Centre working with our dedicated fleet team there, and then again I can be working from home doing all my admin!" -- Strategic Account Manager
- "Every day is different – that is what I love about my job. I am involved in all areas of the business so one day it could be providing a solution to a customer's problem, the next recruiting and developing employees, the next statement reviews where I can guide my branch managers on driving revenue and controlling costs. I love getting the best out of my employees." -- Area Manager
- "There is no typical day at Enterprise – it is a fast paced reactive environment where priorities can change at any second. I cover 7 locations in the Northwest so I can be in any one of those branches on any given day. My normal responsibilities are training, auditing, and performance management through review meetings." -- Area Manager
- "Variety, and that is why I get such satisfaction. There is not a typical day, everyday involves interaction with my staff, the managers I manage either face to face, on the phone, or via email. I interact with customers and accounts from a management and sales perspective. I have general management tasks daily, proactive and also reactive, I liken my role to the circus plate spinner – there is always a plate to attend to, to keep it spinning!" -- Area Manager
- "Call each morning with every team member to get them started on their day. I can then typically have one or two meetings to attend anywhere across my region. Any service issues for my top 10 accounts I deal with personally. I will then work on any training pieces coming up in the next week. Then we have some paperwork, documenting the meetings I have attended giving a summary to the customer of what to expect going forward. It is then my job to ensure all we promised is delivered. Where possible it’s nice to get out to the rental branches and chat to the Branch Managers to motivate them to work even closer with our department. Every week there is some form of training with my team or with the newer employees in our group." -- Group Sales Manager
- "I don't have a typical day; my role involves many projects and duties. One day I may be at a building site, one on the road auditing, one working on a lighting project, one on a lease. All days involve multi tasking, as well as the scheduled tasks I am trying to complete. A lot of trouble shooting and reactive issues can also mean my schedule changes day to day." -- Group Operations Manager
- "No day is ever the same – which is what I like the most. I spend about 50% of my time outside of the office in external meetings and the remainder in the office. 90% of my time is spent working with people – on projects, on assignments, etc. The day is varied – and I really enjoy that." -- HR Manager
- "It is hard to describe a typical day as each one is different! As a Department Manager, some of my time is spent following up with my team to ensure the department is running smoothly, meeting my expectations and the expectations of Senior Management. One of the most important aspects of my role (and one that I thoroughly enjoy) is developing my employees through one to one training and performance development meetings, where I give them feedback that is both positive and constructive. My time is also spent reviewing our financial statements and payroll to ensure accuracy, and following up on our internal controls to ensure they stay strong. Additionally, my team and I compile reports and analysis to look for trends in our business that could potentially save us money. I also work with other Department Managers to look at ways we can improve the business, go out into the field to train Daily Rental employees and we spend time learning from one another, broadening our knowledge of the business. Lastly, I have monthly meetings with the General Manager, Daily Rental City Managers and Controller to evaluate our performance for the previous month to see where improvements can be made, and to discuss the coming month's performance and project where we will end up. There is so much more to my role but this is a glimpse into how I spend some of my time!" -- Assistant Financial Controller
- "A typical day would be to print off and analyse stock. Answer emails before then heading out to meet customers. This would normally take me up to 5pm by which time I normally finish the day on the computer tying up loose ends." -- Sales Manager
- "I’m either meeting with new accounts to discuss their rental requirements or in the office following up on previous meetings. I am a point of contact for both new and existing customers, so I often deal with a variety of internal and external queries and questions." -- UK Implementation Manager
- "Every day is different. I book at least one month in advance. One day can be focused on growth, where we have conference calls with branch managers on their marketing efforts and what support they need in the local market place to drive results. Another day I can be in the branches ensuring operations are where they need to be in the four core areas. I review the financial statement one on one with area managers where we discuss best practices and opportunities for improvement in the four core areas." -- Group Rental Manager
- "Anything, from cleaning a car to meeting a prospective new account. Much of my time is spent with my team on the front line. A 7:30am start and still going strong at 6pm until the last customer is on the road." -- Area Manager
Culture
- "We have a friendly and fun team environment, and I also feel that I am supported by not only my team but also the other departments within our organisation. This has also been commented upon by some of the clients I work with. The social aspect is also great and although we do not get together that often, when we do, we really make the most of it!" -- Strategic Account Manager
- "Each branch is its own profit centre and as such this creates a real team atmosphere within the business. There is a deep management structure with several layers to ensure everyone gets the training and development they need. All Enterprise employees have to start at the MT level and work their way up to senior positions. I would say that Enterprise has a lot of young professionals so this does create a vibrant social culture where colleagues do socialise together after hours." -- Area Manager
- "The company culture is and has always been a fun one. There is a great deal of focus on making the work environment a fun and rewarding place to work. This does result in the team socialising outside of work." -- Remarketing Manager
- "The people are what make this company so remarkable! Some of my closest friends are Enterprise employees that I have worked with at some point during my career. This is one of the reasons why I am still here today, happy as ever, after nine years of service! The social aspect of our company is brilliant which makes it such a fun place to work. I feel that we have a great culture where we have fun and laugh but we also work hard, meet our deadlines and perform to the highest levels. We have a strong team environment where everyone helps each other out to ensure the team meets their goals as a collective effort. We really support one another within our department and we provide this same level of support to employees in other departments as well. I feel there is a camaraderie amongst Enterprise employees where we help to take care of one another and support each other both personally and professionally." -- Assistant Financial Controller
- "There’s a decentralised structure so each branch has a team that often socialise together and form a bond. There can be rivalry as Enterprise employees are competitive, but this is mostly friendly." -- Area Manager
- "The best thing about Enterprise Rent-A-Car is that we are all part of one team, from the bottom to the top everyone has time for each other and supports each other in their career development. Early in my career I was lucky enough to be mentored by some great people, and now I get to return the favour by being a part of the Enterprise mentor programme. It’s really really rewarding when you see someone that you have helped and developed get a promotion, and of course then we all go out together and celebrate. The team I work in is a small one, however every time I get a challenge that I have not faced before I can give the other two a call, and one of them will have faced a similar situation or have an idea, and we all work together to create the best solution for our customer. We have regular team nights out and some of my best friends now are people that I work with, we also have a big party every couple of years for the whole office. The last one had a Hollywood theme and we had a photographer and Enterprise Rent-A-Car’s name done up like the Hollywood sign. There were over 700 of us there and it was a really fantastic night." -- Strategic Account Manager
- "We have a strong team ethic and although we help each other out, we are also very competitive. It’s a very fast paced and vibrant office with ambitious, competitive employees vying to be recognised as the best. Many of our team have developed strong friendships and will socialise, and even end up in a house share as they move around for promotion. We have many group events and area nights out." -- Area Manager
- "Culture is very much an ‘open door’ policy. All senior leadership are communicated to on a first name basis and are accessible to all levels of employees. Promotion is based upon your performance within your peer group, not on length of service, and as a manager you are recognised for developing and promoting your employees. Honesty and integrity are core values and business ethics are taken very seriously. Teamwork is promoted as all management from assistants upwards are paid of their own cost centres bottom line. Having ‘fun’ is a key feature to the working day. Employees do socialise together, especially during earlier time in our careers, however less so as we've got older and started families!" -- Vehicle Acquisitions Manager
- "I started with the company twelve years ago, at that time I was one of the younger employees at our group, now I am over the average age and throughout the years as I have worked and progressed to my current role I have always felt I could speak my mind, that I would be listened to, and have not felt barriers between different levels of employees. The company has always been a very friendly place to work, and I have always socialised with many of my colleagues." -- Vehicle Acquisitions Manager
- "Work hard play hard, open door policy, your team become family and you want to work for each other and help each other out. Socially there is usually plenty going on if you want to do that, I'm getting a bit old for all that now! Branches have to work together, without that our structure doesn't work. Branches lend staff to other branches, help move cars when they can, etc." -- Area Manager
- "Enterprise is a fun and friendly place... where teamwork rules. Just like it says in one of our values! Enterprise has a very flat structure – everyone is treated the same and there isn't any hierarchy. The teamwork is immense – we couldn't do our jobs (in any department) without the help and support of our colleagues. Our culture is very tight knit – it's not unusual to hear of employees out after work on a Friday night, or getting together for a BBQ or a football match on a Saturday. The majority of my friends work for Enterprise – it is people who possess and believe in similar values and the values of the company (integrity, community, teamwork, etc.) – so they are people that I would naturally gravitate towards outside of the office." -- HR Manager
- "Enterprise has a very strong company culture driven from its family ownership. As the majority of employees begin life as a Management Trainee in a branch and work their way up, there is a strong sense of belonging and commitment to the company. At the Head Office, there is a good level of support both professionally and socially." -- UK Implementation Manager
- "Over the past 12 years I have worked within many teams within Enterprise. The culture remains the same wherever I have worked. Enterprise tends to hire positive, energetic, sociable people. This results in working with people who are like minded. We tend to socialise together on a regular basis outside of work, in fact some of my closest friends started off as colleagues at work. Although Enterprise is a competitive environment (which it definitely is!), we have fun with it. It has never turned into a negative atmosphere. Here if you share what you have found successful, people give you credit and it reflects well on you. Therefore everyone is open and supportive." -- Strategic Account Manager
- "There are 9 regional groups across the UK. Each group has a similar set up with a General Manager leading a team of Department Heads. They include Daily Rentals (operational), Financial, Vehicle Acquisitions and Remarketing, HR and Sales. Each department head is then responsible for their own team and their success, whilst continually supporting the daily rental operation. Each group has their own daily rental branches to work with, split into areas and run by an Area Manager. Each branch typically has 4-5 staff run by an Assistant and Branch Manager. It may sound hard to believe but it is a really close knit community... We have all come up through the ranks, starting in the rental branches so there is team spirit and respect for each other's position. Each department in our administration office is there to support the daily rental teams. There is competition within our rental branches, but not to the point of aggression. We are all there to work hard for a common goal – our customers and therefore Enterprise. We do have a group social gathering twice a year, and when we hit milestones of achievement. Within each branch they will have branch nights out or area nights out, especially to reward those who have achieved outstanding results – then the entertainment is on Enterprise." -- Group Sales Manager
- "The company's structure and hierarchy are very much based around internal promotion – you generally have to do a job to get the job. Colleagues support each other well – the nature of the job the majority of our employees does creates a tightly knit bond between them. Employees within the same branch/department work well together – getting competing branches/areas to work well together is a challenge that we work on increasing. Employees at a branch level will socialise together – at an administrative level any socialising is an afterthought and doesn’t occur." -- Vehicle Repair Manager
Relations with Management
- "My manager keeps me informed of decisions that may impact my team so that I am not caught unawares. I feel senior management does a good job of communicating decisions to our employees, along with the thought process behind the decision. Of course decisions are going to be made that I do not have a say in, but there are many times that I am a part of the decision making process which is very empowering. I enjoy contributing to the decision making process on areas that are going to drive our business forward." -- Assistant Financial Controller
- "I have worked in areas and previous years whereby management have worked a lot closer with employees. The last couple of years though this has declined, and generally to those above area manager it is obvious that the autonomy allowed for individuals to make sound decisions has diminished and people are being told what they have to do, as opposed to looking at individual situations. There is a blanket policy – mainly staffing levels that are completely unrealistic, and exceptions need to be made for geographical challenges of certain areas – Wales especially!! We are allowed to make many decisions, however many decisions have been taken away in recent years, which is incredibly frustrating." -- Area Manager
- "Management keeps us very informed. We have a monthly ‘assembly’ for all of our employees in our head office – which is conducted by the MD of the UK/Ireland and the MD of Europe. In addition to presentations of all types, there's an opportunity for a Q & A. All employees have the opportunity to contribute ideas and they are all considered. A lot of our really great ideas have come from our new employees – our ‘pick up’ service is one that comes to mind." -- HR Manager
- "Upper management always keep us informed. We have meetings once a month and I speak to my line manager at least once a day, and normally see him once a week. He always allows me input into decisions and is there to guide me." -- Area Manager
- "I think we have a great system of sharing information. We get regular emails from the owner himself in St. Louis thanking us for hard work, or celebrating with us for milestones, or commiserating with us on global disasters. We are all able to input our thoughts and desires of change via our employee opinion survey. This is held for every employee every two years and gives them an anonymous opportunity to share their views on everything Enterprise. We have seen some great changes come about in our company through the simple ideas of our employees." -- Group Sales Manager
- "Enterprise is growing. It can be difficult to feed everything which is happening in the business to all parties. Overall I think Enterprise has done well on getting this part right. Information is fed back to us in regular scheduled meetings and emails. Communications also comes from line managers. As the focus is on being the best we can be as a company, I have always found that Enterprise upper management is very receptive to ideas and thoughts regarding decisions which are being made. Everyone's opinions count, and there is definitely a feeling that people on the front have the most current market intelligence and their opinions are actively sort." -- Strategic Account Manager
- "I have friends that work in companies where they never see the senior management, never mind speak to them! That’s the complete opposite of Enterprise Rent-A-Car, not only do we regularly talk to senior management, it’s friendly and on first name terms. I recently had a baby, and I was overwhelmed by the number of congratulations messages that I got from my colleagues and on my return to work, every department head and the UK General Manager all invited me to spend time with them being updated about their department. This made me feel really welcomed back to work, and also helped me hit the ground running as I got acquainted with my new customers. We have quarterly meetings where the whole office, from the receptionist to the European General Manager meet and get a company update, everyone gets that chance to ask questions, from could we have an extra microwave in the canteen, to economic forecasts for the year ahead. We get the opportunity to ask questions on the day, or people who are shy and would not want to ask a question in a front of a large group can email them in. I also take part in a second meeting where all the level III and level IV managers meet and get a more detailed update about all areas of the business. We then share that information out to our own teams in smaller groups. There are a number of committees in Enterprise as well, such as the Women in Management committee and the Diversity and Family Focus Group. We have representatives from all employee levels on these committees, and we all work together to look at issues that are important for employees and make Enterprise a better place to work." -- Strategic Account Manager
- "Management does keep us all informed of firm-wide decisions. We are often allowed to contribute to the decisions – but generally feel that it is just lip service being made as the decision has already been made." -- Vehicle Repair Manager
- "I think that management at our company are very approachable. We have regular meetings where we are kept up to date with opportunities the company is involved in, and are always given the opportunity to ask questions or suggest topics to be discussed at these meetings. These meetings offer our level 3 and 4 employees the opportunity to put their opinions forward." -- Strategic Account Manager
- "The communication channels are open at Enterprise and decisions are made swiftly and decisively. This enables us to enact change much quicker than other organisations to improve performance. As a member of the senior management team, I am often expected to offer new ideas/solutions to help improve the business." -- Area Manager
- "I am always informed about all decisions made and why, and I as a manager make sure I do the same. Contribution is encouraged." -- Group Operations Manager
- "Management is accessible. Virtually all of the highest level employees have come from a rental background, so are very open to contributions to decisions made regarding specialised support functions. Communication of bigger picture decisions will come through company, or country wide, emails from company and UK management." -- Vehicle Acquisitions Manager
Formal Training
- "It has developed immensely over the last 3 or 4 years to the stage where it is now very extensive. More than being given time to attend, it is mandatory to turn up and managers are encouraged to treat training as the highest priority in developing their employees." -- Vehicle Acquisitions Manager
- "Trainees receive a training folder that they need to complete. They go to head office once a month for formal training. They are given informal training on the job most days. As soon as they become an assistant manger they have a core series to complete, including things such as communications, review writing and leadership, etc. Then as a branch manger they go on two two-day courses learning about how to motivate, communicate and train the team and essential leadership skills. There is a mentor program – a new trainee is assigned a mentor when they start the company and they have to do three mentor meetings before they can progress to the next stage of management. I have learnt numerous skills over the years such as communication skills, how to motivate my team, time management and how to delegate, sales skills, customer service skills, basically an MBA in business." -- Area Manager
- "Enterprise has a very structured training programme for all employees and it's very defined and scripted for every level and position. Training is mandatory – so you attend if you are scheduled. In addition to formal training, there is lots of informal ‘on the job’ training which takes place every day. Managers (and everyone else for that matter) are available to help throughout the day. It's a very open door policy here. I have learned tremendous business skills here that I doubt I would have learned at another company. In addition, financial statements are an open book – they aren't hidden and are accessible to everyone." -- HR Manager
- "At the start of their career trainee's get a structure to work towards and from there their skills are polished and they work towards running a branch. After that, a lot of the work we do is on the job training and natural ability. Informal training happens daily. I have personally learned a lot from management skills to organisation, leadership, etc." -- Area Manager
- "There is a well structured training programme in place from the day you start which gives you a set out formal training plan to give you the knowledge you need to progress through the business. This is supported by your line manager who gives informal training daily. The ethos within Enterprise is that your ability to develop employees is crucial. Therefore the best evidence of whether you are ready to be promoted, which normally means having an increased number of direct reports, is how successful you have been at developing your current reports. If you have not reached certain levels in our four key areas (which includes employee development) then you are not eligible for promotion. I really like that as it means that no-one is intimidated if you are learning quickly as it reflects positively on them, which I think is different than in a lot of other companies my friends work at. When you first start you are given a mentor in a mentoring program. Now I am a mentor which I enjoy. I still feel I benefit from mentors but there is no longer an established programme for my level. Instead you are encouraged to develop a network yourself, and approach people you would like to learn from. When I have done this the people I have approached have all been really generous with their knowledge and time which is great." -- Strategic Account Manager
- "We are given the opportunity to attend courses and training, although I do feel this could be better promoted. There is no formal mentoring program for higher level employees which would be great to see. However, management are approachable and I feel that I have the opportunity to ask for advice and support." -- Strategic Account Manager
- "Ensuring that we train and develop our employees is of the utmost importance because with this training comes confidence and empowerment. We have a structured training plan for both Daily Rental and Administrative employees, although they are different due to the nature of the roles. A large part of the training is on the job with your manager and colleagues, as you learn new things on a daily basis. There is a mentor program for employees who are new to the company which helps provide them with guidance and training from someone outside their daily working environment, who talks to them about their career progression and aspirations. I have had great mentors throughout my nine years with the company, many of which I still keep in contact with to this day. Now I have the privilege of being a mentor to employees who have just started with the company which gives me a chance to make a difference in their career. My manager is a great mentor for me as he is constantly giving me advice and support while challenging me to take my career to the next level. I am able to go to him with anything (professionally or personally) as he is extremely approachable and always makes time for me no matter how busy he may be. I make it a priority to give my employees this same kind of support as they come before anything else, without them we would be nothing." -- Assistant Financial Controller
- "When you start with Enterprise Rent-A-Car you take part in the management training programme, you have a dedicated folder that you work through at your own pace supported by the team in your branch, and then you attend formal training sessions as well. Each region has its own training manager who coordinates the training programme, they are also on hand whenever you feel you need additional training, for example I wanted to improve my excel skills and they found an online course that I could do. You also get regular reviews where you discuss performance with your manager, and areas for improvements and developments. You are involved in setting your own goals and targets which is great – the review structure is also really clear and everyone knows what they are going for." -- Strategic Account Manager
- "I feel that the training culture at Enterprise is certainly very different to most other companies. Most of our training is done on the job and takes the form of coaching, we feel this means employees learn much quicker as they are never learning just theory at Enterprise. It is always practical based learning. Quarterly training is given in a more classroom setting, and you attend regular review meetings with your line manager. I left university as a graduate with no business experience. 8 years later, I manage a business with an annual revenue of several million." -- Area Manager
- "Training and mentoring is of a good quality for lower level employees coming through the ranks. Once at a senior management level however, it becomes virtually nonexistent. Some line managers are approachable – others are not – I currently have no mentor." -- Vehicle Repair Manager
Career Progression
- "If you want to make your way to the top and you perform you will – I was promoted to be a local sales manager after less than a year with the company! Because Enterprise Rent-A-Car has a transparent promotion process and promotes from within you can see what you need to do to get where you want to go, and then it’s up to you if you get there!" -- Strategic Account Manager
- "Very easy, the cream always rises to the top and promotions are always based off performance, you just need the hunger to progress better than the guy or girl next to you, and work very hard. You are measured on your branch customer service score, sales, corporate leads, branch phone handling, and fleet growth. You need a bit of luck to be in the right place at the right time sometimes. Ultimately your manager promotes you and sells/recommends you, so you need to impress and not sit back." -- Area Manager
- "Not easy – you need dedication and hard work to move up. The rewards are available to the highest achievers within the company to a point – the ability to proceed does narrow considerably once you reach a certain level where you become dependent on someone vacating a position in order to apply for it." -- Vehicle Repair Manager
- "There is a lot of movement in our company through its success and growth so promotions are based on who is best for the job rather than how long you have been with the company, and all promotions come from within. It takes performance to get to the top, pure and simple. If you’re a consistent top performer you will be rewarded!" -- Area Manager
- "If you are ambitious, focused and hard working, it is possible to move through the ranks in the company. You need to have a strong sales ability and commitment to customer service. The Management Trainee structure is targeted towards this, and if the employee stays focused on working through their training folder they can move up the rental ranks fairly easily. If the individual's sales scores are low, or their branch customer service score is not at or above corporate average, then it may be more difficult to move up. If an employee becomes stagnated then the progression can be much slower. All employees have personal development meetings, one on ones, and yearly reviews to monitor performance and career progression." -- UK Implementation Manager
- "It is tough because we have a lot of talented people and only promote from within, but the best person gets the job regardless of the length of service." -- Area Manager
- "It is promotion based on performance, not how long you have worked at the company, which is a philosophy I love!" -- European Talent Acquisition Manager
- "The employees’ career is absolutely in their own hands. For the individuals that are committed to progression and development, they will be rewarded with progression – it’s a simple formula!" -- HR Manager
- "From my own perspective, it's very easy to move up at Enterprise. We promote strictly from within – we don't bring in anyone to the company except at the trainee level. Enterprise promotes on performance – so you don't have to stand in the queue and wait your turn. For my first promotion, I had been with the company only 3 months. I interviewed against employees who had been with the company 2-5 years. I received the role, based on my performance and my skill level." -- HR Manager
- "Providing you have the aptitude and the appetite, you can move up very quickly. Set yourself goals. I set myself assistant manager within 12 months, branch manager within 2 years. I achieved both these goals. Work hard but also work smart. Look for better ways of performing, be as productive as you can, sell well, serve customers well, and grow the business by closing accounts in the local market place and you stand a very good chance of a successful career at Enterprise." -- Group Rental Manager
- "It is easy if you apply yourself and remember you control your own destiny, too many people make excuses and blame others for their own short comings. You only get one chance in life and you have to seize the moment. Enterprise gives you an unbelievable framework to be a success, the rest is down to your own application." -- Head of Sales
- "If you work hard – it can be very easy. First 10-12 months you complete a training manual. From there, it is down to your own dedication and results in primarily customer service and sales to make a name for yourself. So long as your branch's customer service results are at the required level you are eligible for interviewing for Assistant, to Branch, to Area, to Group and outwards to other admin department positions." -- Group Sales Manager
- "You are in control of your career. It takes hard work and drive to succeed. What is great is that you can progress as quickly as you want to. From day one it is clearly outlined what you need to do to get to the next level and everyone WANTS you to get there! Promotion is not based on seniority or anything else, purely your performance." -- Strategic Account Manager
- "The promotional path is very well trodden and clear. What gets you promoted? Performance!" -- Area Manager
Diversity (women, minorities & LGBT)
- "A great deal of work goes into attracting employees from ethnic minorities. This is carefully monitored to ensure females in the workforce and ethnic minorities have a voice and are being recruited in satisfactory numbers. This is a key part of the company's cultural compass." -- Group Rental Manager
- "There isn't a company that's more committed to diversity than Enterprise. As a result, we have invested a tremendous amount in recruiting so that we can go to every university in the UK. Going to only the top 30 unis in the country isn't diverse – and you won't get a diverse employee base either." -- HR Manager
- "I feel our company is very committed to ensuring we have a diverse set of employees and supplier base. We have a diversity committee in our division which focuses on community and charitable events, workplace quality, training and business ethics, and recruitment. We are a focus group that meets quarterly to discuss ideas and initiatives that we believe would benefit our employees and customers. It is really rewarding as we have had good success in getting new ideas implemented which make a difference to our employees and customers. As a company we are very open to people of all genders, races and sexual orientations and ensure everyone is treated equally." -- Assistant Financial Controller
- "Enterprise has people from all cultures and societies and does its upmost to integrate them into the company. Our retention is currently close to 80% which would suggest how well we treat our employees." -- Area Manager
- "Very committed as we strive to reflect the communities we do business in. We are very diverse at entry level and lower management; however we are not as diverse at the senior management level, but are working to change this." -- Vehicle Acquisitions Manager
- "The corporate commitment to diversity is strong and comes from Senior Management. All employees attend diversity training and there are active committees at head office and throughout the UK. Enterprise has won The Times ‘Top 10 Where Women Want to Work’ for the past six years. There are examples of very senior female managers, however, the company is still fairly white, straight, male dominated in the top positions." -- UK Implementation Manager
- "The company has attempted to address diversity through training which it has developed over the last five years. However, it is proving hard to actually impact our diversity within the company, its going to take a long time to see any changes. We are still a hugely white, male dominated work force, and women still find it extremely hard to see a full time career in the rental sector once they have had children. The hours that our rental employees can have to work at times are certainly a factor here." -- Vehicle Acquisitions Manager
- "At Enterprise we have a Diversity and Women in Leadership committee who work on various initiatives. The maternity benefits are much better than at many companies, and we operate a child care voucher scheme for nursery care." -- Strategic Account Manager
- "We are recognised in the Top 50 Companies Where Women Want to Work. Having said this, we still have work to do to improve our representation of women and ethnic minorities in management, and to achieve this we are looking at all areas of recruitment and trying to ensure our working environment is open and supportive to employees of any background." -- Area Manager
- "We actively recruit from all backgrounds, our management are trained on diversity and we have a diversity, career and family focus group that meets once a quarter as a forum to discuss recruitment, training, community events and workplace quality." -- Area Manager
- "Having a diverse workforce and client base is one of our founding values which are the rules every Enterprise employee lives by. Throughout my career I have always been asked to get involved with our diversity initiatives by joining my local team. We have nine regions and each has their own team where they focus on initiatives that are important to the people who work in that region. Recently we joined Stonewall which has been really good as we have always had different programmes running that are aimed at women, parents and cultures but none really focused on LGBT. As a rule of thumb, whatever is important to an employee will be taken up by the Diversity Team. I have always been offered the opportunity to help change and work on things that I am passionate and really play a role in what we want our culture to be." -- Strategic Account Manager
Offices & Dress Code
- "At Enterprise Rent-A-Car we have a very smart dress code – Jack Taylor went to work in a suit and tie when he founded the company and so do we. I really like looking smart for work – looking professional makes me feel professional and our customers really like it. Enterprise Rent-A-Car has a ‘dress for success’ programme to help employees with buying clothes when they first start, which is a real bonus as well." -- Strategic Account Manager
- "Similar to the perks – Enterprise opts not to have lavish offices. The offices are nice – but not flashy. We aren't a flashy company. We have over 360 locations across the UK – so there are offices just about anywhere. Dress code is formal – suit and tie for men and comparable for ladies – always professional. If you'd like to come to work in jeans and a t-shirt, this isn't the place for you! Our dress is very important to our image – our customers believe in us and take us seriously because of how we look – our dress code differentiates us from our competitors." -- HR Manager
- "We have multiple offices across each region (approx. 350+ rental and 10 admin). The locations vary in size and facilities based on the region, i.e. large more rural offices in areas of the north vs. more compact city centre locations in London. Each office however will have a place for employees to relax and eat lunch. The dress code is conservative business all the way. Suits, shirts, ties for men. Clean cut and smart." -- Group Sales Manager
- "Business dress is the strict code. Locations and facilities are best described as functional, however commissioned employees are paid off the bottom line so the ‘basic' nature is not an issue." -- Vehicle Acquisitions Manager
- "Our main office is fine – some of our local offices are in a poor condition. With regards to dress code – Enterprise has slowly relaxed its policies over the years but is still light years behind most modern companies – in particular with regards to dress and facial appearance." -- Vehicle Repair Manager
- "Offices are always being upgraded as we look to improve our brand image. We are always on the lookout for new branches to open. The dress code is smart and professional. We are a customer facing organisation so must show a very professional dress code at all times." -- Group Rental Manager
- "Our office is not in the most luxurious area, but it has been refurbished inside which makes it quite a nice place to work. Our facilities are kept clean and up to date which is important for our employees. We promote a professional work environment that is clean and tidy which allows people to be more effective and efficient. The dress code is professional attire every day (except the last Friday of every month when we get to ‘dress down’) which is fine with me as I think there is a link between how people behave and their attire. A more professional dress code leads to a higher standard of professional behaviour in my opinion!" -- Assistant Financial Controller
- "Offices are mixed in size and location, some have better facilities than others, but it is sometimes the less desirable locations that end up having the most character and forging the strongest teams. Dress code is business attire and I strongly believe you need to feel good about how you look to be able to be confident in what you do." -- Area Manager
Green Initiatives
- "Running one of the largest fleets in the world means we contribute a lot of CO2. We are certainly industry leaders in our ‘green initiatives’. To name a couple; we have our 50 million tree pledge, we help fund an alternative fuel research project and currently offer a carbon offset to out renters." -- Area Manager
- "We organise initiatives to reduce carbon emissions, we take part in community initiatives to assist with the landscape and nature. I personally drive this so know how committed we are, and won an award recently for our environmental involvement and dedication." -- Group Operations Manager
- "This has been much more of a focus in recent years with the initiatives on planting 50 million trees across the world, and also with offering the carbon offset option here in the UK. Additionally, we are evaluating our use of energy and working on becoming more green in this area as well." -- Assistant Financial Controller
- "Although we are a car rental provider, there is a strong global corporate commitment to reducing our carbon footprint by donating to bio-fuel research facilities, planting trees and offering carbon offsetting to our customers. At a local level, there is some recycling, etc., but not as many green initiatives as there could be." -- UK Implementation Manager
- "We have lots of schemes and initiatives from a global level of planting 50 million trees, to local community development volunteering projects and fund raising events. We are also investing tens of millions into renewable fuel research." -- Area Manager
- "Enterprise Rent-A-Car has its own dedicated environmental programme, Keys to Green – we are all encouraged to play our part. It’s not just something on a poster either, wherever you are at Enterprise Rent-A-Car you can see evidence of our environmental platform and what we are doing to make a difference." -- Strategic Account Manager
- "Over the last three years we have centralised much of our systems cutting down on major wastage in paper, postage and fuel." -- Vehicle Acquisitions Manager
- "Our company has a green committee and has invested money in several green schemes including research into alternative fuels, the planting of 50 million trees and a carbon offsetting program." -- Strategic Account Manager
- "We work with cars so our carbon foot print could be huge. Enterprise takes it very seriously. To combat this Enterprise offers customers a carbon offset programme to allow people to reduce the impact on the environment. We are also trailing an hourly rental programme so that people can run more of a sort of ‘car share programme’ which can reduce omissions. They also invest millions into renewable fuel research to try and find better sources of fuel. In our rental branches we have inbuilt car wash machines, these are all fitted to recycle water so that we are not using unnecessary clean water. For our 50th anniversary, Enterprise pledged to plant 50 million trees over the next 50 years. Finally on a local level we all recycle." -- Strategic Account Manager
