  • Currently very satisfied with hours, although this is department dependant.

  • I usually spend between 50 to 60 hours a week at work. I know comparatively this isn't bad for a City firm, its the unpredictability of the length of your day that is frustrating and wears you down.

  • It comes with the job, but the unpredictability of hours as a lawyer is a huge drawback to the career.

  • It all depends on the work. I like to get in early but I can be done by 6.30 on a quiet day. I've only ever stayed really late once.

  • I think my hours are pretty good for a City law firm, I usually get in at 8.30 – 9 and leave between 6.30 and 7.15. I never feel that I'm wasting time when I work late; there is always a good reason. I have occasionally worked till 11 but that has typically been the day before going on holiday when there have been loose ends to tie up before handing work over. The hours are better than I had expected, but I had expected very long hours. I had not expected the level of exhaustion trainees feel – every minute of the day is spent concentrating and it can be draining at first.

  • I work on average 9:30 – 8:00pm which is alright. This seems about average when I talk to other trainees or friends at different firms.

  • I really cannot complain. Most of it is down to personal time management. There is not a culture of jackets on backs of seats here.

  • I have a very good department for hours! My work is typically non-urgent because of the nature of the department and so will typically work a 45 hours week. The latest I have stayed is around 8.30pm and do not anticipate it being much more. But I do work hard to make sure that I have a good structure and take shorter lunches so that I can go home as soon as I feel my work for the day is done. Other trainees in other departments are not so lucky with hours.

  • A bit too much but I know it’s not nearly as bad as lots of firms. Work on average 8:30am to 7:30pm each day. Never work at weekends.

  • 55 hours a week average – but it’s heavily dependent on the deal at the time.

  • Everyone at the firm works hard when they need to but there is a definite emphasis on going home by 6-6.30 if there is nothing pressing to be done.

  • Time spent in the office varies. Due to the nature of the work we do it can be frustrating because you may have a quiet day but then have to work through the night to get something that landed on your desk at 6pm done. On the whole the hours I work are extremely good.

  • I typically spend about 50 hours working each week. There is no expectation though. Some people work shorter hours regularly. There is no face-time culture and people are encouraged to leave as early as they can.

  • Average 50 hours a week. Although I expected to work long hours at times, the hours have been consistently high.

  • Hours were very good in my last department and a bit higher in the current department but still manageable. On average, I work 8:45am to 7pm i.e. About 50 hours a week, which is about what I expected.

  • Well over 40 hours a week, usually without lunch breaks and often without leaving the office at all during the day. Not necessarily more than I expected but perhaps a bit more than I would like in an ideal world when these hours are pretty constant.

  • Average hours are more than expected but I do not think this a reflection so much on the firm as on the City itself; they average around 50-60 hours per week but can be much more.

  • I have only just qualified so I couldn't say how many hours I bill a month but generally I spend 9 hours in the office a day.

  • Around 55 hours per week. What I expected but would prefer less!
