Life on the Job
Satisfaction with Work
- "I really enjoy working at my company. The atmosphere is great to work in, and in terms of learning, people around you have an understanding that you are on the path to becoming an accountant and therefore do not expect you to know everything. They give their time to explain things, but also challenge you to use your initiative." -- Auditor, Entry Level
Quality of Work
- "There is always something new and different to learn when working on a new client. It is a steep learning curve but it gives you a real 'buzz' when applying technical knowledge gained at college to a 'real life' work situation. As a junior on the team, I would say you have quite a lot of contact time with the client out on site, because you will be the one requesting loads of documents to carry out your testing." -- Entry Level
"So far I have worked on too very large audits, which has given me fantastic insight into property commerce and the audit of companies of that nature. I have had exposure to interacting with clients, learning their internal systems, and due to the large amount of subsidiaries I have been able to really develop my audit skills in specific areas. I look forward to experiencing smaller audits later in the year." -- Auditor, Entry Level
Culture
- "The culture is very friendly. All Partners, managers and seniors are
very approachable, which allows great working relationships throughout
the company. I think UHY is very good in recruiting people who fit
nicely in this culture. We are encouraged to work together, and really
understand the value that working as a cohesive team can bring. Outside
of work, the team regularly meets for drinks after work, and also
organise mini events on weekends." -- Auditor, Entry Level
"People are very helpful and supportive. The partners are very approachable and willing to address any concerns. Socialising outside work varies – it's harder for the audit department as we are hardly in the office at the same time so tend to socialise with people in our year." -- Junior Accountant, Entry Level
Hours, Pay & Perks
Hours
- "On average I work the standard 35 hours a week, although this can
differ when working to tight deadlines. I have only had to work one
weekend so far since starting, whilst doing long days on audit. UHY
does not ignore this fact and allows you to take all the overtime you
have done as Time off in Lieu, in quieter periods. The company is good
at scheduling staff, and therefore, they are usually very flexible when
it comes to booking holiday. They also have an option to purchase an
additional 10 holiday days." -- Auditor, Entry Level
"I have had to do the occasional bit of overtime but the firm generally gives you this time off in lieu. For trainees there is not a culture of long hours and 90% of the time I work a 7 hour day." -- Junior Accountant, Entry Level
Pay
- "Obviously you want to get paid more (!) but I think it is reasonable for a second year trainee given the level of responsibility. Plus the fact they are paying for your study leave and courses etc." -- Junior Accountant, Entry Level
"I believe the starting salary at UHY is very competitive with the market. I think it is fair compensation for the skills you offer the company at that stage, but who wouldn’t want to earn more?!" -- Auditor, Entry Level
Interviews
Interviews & Assessments
- "My recruitment process was different to the other graduates as I
joined the firm outside their standard in take. In terms of interview
preparation, UHY look for numerous things from a candidate, beginning
simply with their ability to fit into the team and carry out tasks.
Understanding what your role entails, and customising answers that
explain how your experience can add value in these situations is
important." -- Auditor, Entry Level
"Two rounds – initial interview then interview day with partners." -- Junior Accountant, Entry Level
The Inside Buzz View
Graduate Careers at UHY Hacker Young
To stand a chance of securing a spot at UHY Hacker, you’ll need a minimum of a 2:1 and 280 UCAS points. There is good news though; compared to the Big Four, the selection process is relatively friendly and unintimidating... relatively being the operative word!
Some of the firm's offices don't offer graduate training opportunities, so candidates have to choose from Birmingham, Brighton, London, Newport, Nottingham, Manchester, Scotland, Sunderland or Sheffield. Each site is different; the selection and hiring process differs from place to place, so check your favoured location’s website for specific details on their application process. However, be prepared for strong competition; places are highly esteemed in local job markets due to the firm’s excellent reputation for training.
No matter which location you’re applying to, invariably you’ll begin by submitting an online application. Then if the firm considers you a possible fit, you will be invited for an interview at your chosen office – meeting with an associate and the HR department. Most successful applicants sit through two rounds; the second of which takes place in an assessment centre and lasts most of the day. The final stage will be in the shape of an interview, taken by a partner.
The firm doesn’t actively advertise internships and summer placements, but some offices do provide such opportunities for students going into their final year. Do note however, that even if you secure such a place, this does not guarantee a future job offer. What it does do, is give you a chance to demonstrate your ability, motivation and ambition; so if you get such a chance – make it count!
